Senior Product Manager - Media Services

Job Introduction

The Senior Product Manager will be responsible for defining and implementing a compelling product strategy and vision for the Playback department within Media Services. The Playback team own the media players for the BBC on desktop computers and mobile devices and deliver BBC content to the audience.

With 95% of the UK using the BBC every week, we’re the highest reaching media provider in the UK, driven by the strength of our Broadcast portfolio across TV and Radio. Beyond the UK we are building one of the world’s biggest global media brands, reaching 372 million people a week worldwide across TV, Radio and online.

Using up-to-date technologies and working within a DevOps culture, Media Services Playback is the team responsible for delivering BBC content across all browsers and mobile applications, powering BBC iPlayer, BBC Sounds, BBC News, Sport and more. We handle live media, catch-up media, and Podcasts and support 1000s of different devices, including PCs, phones, tablets, Chromecast and voice controlled devices.

Our Platform builds highly scaled media capabilities that are relied on by millions of users every day, both internally and externally to the organisation.  The iPlayer, iPlayer Radio and BBC Sounds apps are installed on over 30 million phones and tablets, and we handle 13 million plays per day. Globally this adds up to billions of streams delivered to the audience annually. 

Our mission is to build a reliable, scalable, flexible and personalised media platform.  To help secure the future of the BBC in an internet age, as media distribution moves towards being predominantly IP based.

The role is based in MediaCityUK, Salford and will work closely with the mobile development team based there. They will report into the executive product manager who is based in London. The role will cover both mobile and web development.

Are you the right candidate?

The key skills and competencies the candidate will need are:

  • Expertise in product management; the processing of complex requirements which must meet client needs and align with BBC / Departmental strategy
  • Ability to form effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders – who are usually the clients of our products, or teams whose products we depend on
  • Expertise in Agile delivery methodology, particularly Kanban
  • Familiarity with mobile and web software delivery
