Senior Project Manager, South Sudan - BBC Media Action

Job Introduction

BBC Media Action uses media and communications to reduce poverty and promote human rights in developing countries. To achieve this, Media Action partners with civil society, local media and governments to:

  • Produce creative programmes based on robust research in multi-media formats which  engage audiences around key development issues.
  • Strengthen the media sector through building professional capacity and infrastructure.

BBC Media Action delivers a portfolio of media projects in South Sudan. It seeks to expand this portfolio of work, but also to ensure that existing projects are delivered on time, on budget, to the highest standards and in accordance with BBC editorial values as well as Media Action methodologies.

Role Responsibility

You will be responsible for the overall management and delivery of a range of development projects which use the power of media to tackle issues of governance, resilience and health.  You  will ensure that the agreed targets and objectives are met and will ensure the quality and cohesion of project outputs. You'll also lead on securing new funding that is in line with the Country Strategy.  The post holder  will oversee a multidisciplinary team of staff.

You will be responsible for overseeing the overall delivery and budget management of projects, and for reporting on progress to the Country Director, partners and donors. You'll also be responsible for liaising with the relevant teams in the London headquarters. Upon request of the Country Director, you will represent Media Action in South Sudan to key stakeholders and will ensure effective relationships and partnerships with a wide range of partners including broadcasters, NGOs, international development agencies and others. It’s important to be aware that all of South Sudan is considered a High Risk location for security purposes. International staff are subject to movement restrictions including curfews.  Local facilities and infrastructure are very poor. Staff need to possess high levels of personal resilience to thrive in the environment.

Are you the right candidate?

You will need experience of senior project management in a developing-country context with demonstrated capacity to manage large-scale projects effectively.  Strong financial management skills are essential, with proven experience managing medium to large complex budgets including accurate and timely financial and narrative reporting to donors.  You'll need a proven track-record in international development with experience of managing teams of local and international staff at a level which demonstrates experience in developing and improving systems and processes.  You'll also need previous experience of all aspects of writing successful proposals, including project research and development, logframes and budgets.

Contract:  12 month attachment / fixed term contract

Base:  South Sudan

Only internal staff are eligible to apply for the role on an attachment basis. You need to be on a continuing (permanent) or fixed-term contract.  You need to have worked for the BBC for more than one year and not have been on an attachment in the last 12 months. You will also need permission from your line manager.  You can find out more on our attachments page.
