Our key strategic role is to be the pathfinder for the BBC, ensuring that new technologies are used to extend the reach and accessibility of BBC content on any device, anytime, anywhere.

As Senior SEO Analyst for BBC Design & Engineering’s Sport and Live teams, you will play a central role in determining the digital strategy for understanding audience behaviour while using the BBC’s online Sport and Live products, and the routes they take into these products.

This will include driving improvements in the optimisation of content for strong performance within search engines and analysing usage statistics that inform and shape product development strategies that drive reach and improve audience appreciation.

Role Responsibility

  • Gather, analyse and report on usage data for online products across desktop, tablet and mobile platforms, including mobile applications, in order to support product development and data-driven decision making
  • Create, communicate and execute an effective Search Engine Optimisation strategy for BBC Sport & Live that will significantly increase organic search traffic.
  • Work closely with the Sport and Live development and editorial teams on a daily basis to define and deliver recommendations on SEO best practice and optimise how content performs on search engines. This should include:
    • A review of newsroom practices related to optimising content to perform well against current popular search terms
    • A clear plan for upskilling the digital and editorial teams in SEO techniques
  • SEO techniques
  • To monitor the performance of the BBC Sport website on search engines on a daily basis, taking ownership of a toolset and KPIs for SEO related performance that measure:
    • how content ranks in search results for searches using key search terms
    • traffic received from search engines
    • the number of pages receiving SEO referrals
  • To identify SEO related issues and resolve any that arise as quickly as possible, including the implementation of long term measures that reduce occurrences of such issues
  • To devise SEO strategies for key sporting events and campaigns and report on their success
  • To work with Product Managers to prioritise SEO related improvements to the BBC Sport website and BBC Live pages, driving improvements through to completion
  • To report to the Sport PDG regularly on SEO performance, any recent issues affecting SEO performance and the impact/success of improvements made
  • To keep up to date with industry trends, SEO best practices, and search engine algorithm updates (changes to search engine technology) that will impact on the SEO performance of the BBC Sport website and BBC Live pages, identifying changes required to remain competitive
  • To keep up to date with competitor SEO performance and strategies and how these are impacting on our performance, recommending changes required to remain competitive
  • Write clear guidelines and specifications for developers and business analysts implementing SEO best practices, collaborating and interacting with multi-disciplined development teams and quality-assuring all new development  work from an SEO perspective
  • Define and deliver training programmes for Editorial leads and BBC Design & Engineering staff to increase SEO expertise
  • Build relationships between and product/editorial leads, Media Planning, creative marketing and brand marketing teams 
  • Input into the development of a holistic pan-BBC search strategy, combining social media, PPC and SEO
  • Evaluate and make recommendations on the requirement for and use of additional technology or research tools in order to deliver this strategy
  • Work with Audiences teams across the BBC online products ensure effective measurement and regular evaluation of traffic driving to BBC Online from both paid and organic sources
  • Assist in translating SEO-related requirements into user stories and acceptance criteria for iterative delivery
  • Understand and help to maintain a clear product vision across the whole team - be aware of the product and technology strategy and help to work towards it
  • Help facilitate decision making with stakeholders and the development team based on clearly defined options
  • Investigate solutions using a range of approaches, including researching competitor products, commercially available solutions, other BBC products and services

The Ideal Candidate

  • Demonstrable experience in SEO best practice and extensive knowledge of search engine technology
  • Experience and knowledge of Audience data and the ability to analyse, interpret and apply media research
  • Experience of reporting on usage of web products across desktop, tablet and mobile platforms, including mobile applications. Experience should include building dashboards that identify trends in audience behaviour and enable data-driven decision making
  • Experience of reporting on SEO performance and setting measures to define success in this area
  • Experience of working within an agile software delivery environment and collaborating within a multi-disciplinary development team to formulate requirements
  • Experience communicating concepts and ideas to stakeholders, including oral and written presentations, proposals, specifications and reports
  • Experience of working on online application projects and with relevant technologies
  • Evidence of problem solving ability and providing creative solutions
  • Experience of managing relationships with third party suppliers
  • Experience of devising and running training programmes for staff designed to improve knowledge of SEO best practice and awareness of SEO related issues


  • Quickly understands business issues and technical challenges on a project
  • Takes input from product owner and is able to work autonomously to deliver the required artefacts
  • Demonstrable experience of requirements documenting for various audiences - both technical & non-technical
  • Demonstrable experience of working in multiple methodologies such as Agile (particularly Scrum) and other iterative development methodologies
  • Ability to simplify complex problems, processes or projects into component parts and be able to explore and evaluate them systematically.
  • Experience of deadline driven environment with rapid release cycles.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to establish rapport, credibility and strong working relationships
  • Strong negotiation, influencing and presentation skills with the ability to communicate and persuade
  • Will work collaboratively with stakeholders and stay open to ideas/suggestions from others.  A team player able to collaborate across organisational boundaries, embrace change, and make improvements to working practices
  • Understanding of relevant technologies, especially online application projects.
  • Very high degree of internet and computer literacy.

  • Be at the forefront of emerging technologies and understand their relevance to the product, BBC and its diverse audience
