Would you like to be part of a team that runs some of the world’s biggest news social media accounts? Would you like to help run and shape BBC News accounts on FB (53m followers), Insta (20m followers), Twitter (combined over 100m followers) and YT (10m subscribers)?
The BBC is hiring a senior social producer to work out of our bureau in Washington, DC. We only ask that you are creative, crazy about the potential of social media to deliver news to audiences and can cope under pressure (in a breaking news environment).
The position acts as a key liaison between the North America news team and the UK social team, helping to deliver stories about the US and Canada to the rest of the world, and stories about the world to our North American audience on social media.
You must be able to identify a shareable story a mile-off and know how to sell it, in the right way, appropriate to the platform and target audience, generating maximum reach, engagement and/or referrals.
We want you to be comfortable with data and analytics, as we increasingly make use of data to drive tactical decisions about the type, format and timing of content posted, as well as in tracking how our content performs.
The social team is also involved in the wider integration of social media into DC’s newsroom operations – candidates should be capable of identifying breaking news, user generated content of value, and other types of newsworthy material being distributed on social media.
We are currently working in a hybrid work environment. But even when we do return to the office fulltime, you will work closely with the UK team, so being an excellent communicator who is able to build relationships remotely is key.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will want to help modernise our content, help us reach new audiences and can deal with breaking news to our tens of millions followers. We want a level-headed journalist with sound editorial judgment, who thrives in breaking and fast changing news environments.
You will have strong writing skills, the ability to work with visuals and a well-developed understanding of how social media works. You will have experience in managing your own workload as well as leading others and giving feedback to the wider team.
Knowledge of social media platforms and what works well with them is a must; together with experience of working with breaking news. You will have experience of social media content curation and optimisation as well as picture and video editing skills. Evidence of working with paid tools and dashboards such as SocialFlow and CrowdTangle is important.
