Job Introduction

Media Services is the team responsible for publishing all the BBC's online audio and video content, powering iPlayer, BBC Sounds, News and Sport.

Using pioneering, cloud-based technologies at scale, we handle live content, “catch-up”, and podcasts and support thousands of different devices, including PCs, phones, tablets, game consoles, smart speakers and smart TVs.

The iPlayer and Sounds apps have been installed on over 47 million phones and tablets, and we handle 50 million plays daily. Every day we ingest and publish over 1000 hours of content and publish several terabytes of new files.

2021 is off to a strong start: the first three months of the year were BBC iPlayer's best quarter on record with over 1.7 billion streams, in addition it was also a record quarter that saw 342 million plays of all content on BBC Sounds across radio, podcasts and music. Peak data volumes served to viewers exceeded 12 terabits per second during the Euro 2020 final and online viewing requests across the BBC Sport website and BBC iPlayer reached 104 million during the Tokyo Olympics.

Our amazing Media Services team is the engine that provides this scale of service for the BBC audiences.

Role Responsibility

Work alongside the SRE team members to effectively integrate our operations team with our development teams, ensuring the ops team have the tools and data-driven insights they need and expanding their skills to make the best use of these. Promote an engineering “SRE” approach within the team, driving their evolution towards providing automated and self-service interventions.

You'll also:

  • Develop and promote a shared concept of production-readiness, so that operational concerns are made integral to the development process.
  • Consult with product owners and development team leads, ensure sufficient priority is given to operational concerns.
  • Shape technical requirements and specifications, and the engineering approaches taken to implement them
  • Drive and review the team's overall output. Ensure all code is easily maintainable, supportable and minimises risk to run
  • Mentor and guide less experienced members of the team, building their skills and giving feedback and coaching. Push the whole team to adopt best practices in test-driven development, code and documentation reviews, continuous integration/delivery and retrospectives.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for candidates with a combination of the following skills: Linux administration and experience in creating, deploying, and running applications by using containers.

You'll have significant experience with ‘at scale’ Java delivery and you'll be proficient in at least one scripting language.

Industry experience outside of media is very welcome!

Experience using, supporting or developing cloud systems and services at scale. Incorporates a growth mindset, continuously looking to learn new software skills and technologies, ask questions and tackle technical tasks.

Proven experience in working closely with Operations teams and streamlining software delivery.

A passion and drive around utilising data outside of the standard applications of it

Team player that enjoys driving a nurturing team culture where less experienced team members are effectively mentored in a friendly environment and constantly finding new ways to improve collaboration within Media Services and the wider BBC.
