Senior Software Engineer

Job Introduction

The BBC World Service is the world’s most used and most respected international news service with an audience of over 1.5 billion users who visit us each year. Our purpose is to support and grow this.

The World Service product team exists to serve this audience across the world with access to impartial news in 41 languages in formats that are accessible to everyone regardless of geography, technology, connectivity and individual requirements.

 

The successful candidate will work with an immediate team of 5-8 Software Engineers, UX, Product and Test to deliver audience and organisational value.

As an Engineer in our team within BBC News Product Group, you will develop features to streamline the work of our editorial colleagues and allow us to offer even more of our content internationally. Most of our work is explicitly focussed on our International News services and on streaming and on-demand audio and video in our 40+ language services and in English.

As well as having an unusually close relationship with editorial and business development colleagues, we work closely with teams in the central Product and Technology teams. Without these relationships we couldn’t begin to deliver the wide range of capabilities and products we do.

We’re looking for someone who is passionate about delivering production-ready code with minimal guidance, cares deeply about the people who will use and support the systems we build and is looking to develop their mentoring and leadership skills.

Role Responsibility

You will work closely with users, product managers and other stakeholders, working with leading frameworks like React in a mature continuous deployment environment. You will be encouraged make improvements to our working practices, further improve our code quality and guide more junior developers.

You will use judgment in making a trade between design and feasibility. You will add features to make them stand out and be able to withstand a complex, one-page program.

Other accountabilities will include:

  • Work with the team to design features that meets complex product and business needs.
  • Write high-quality test-driven production quality code.
  • Review and give constructive feedback on others’ code.
  • Deliver work to successful completion across the immediate team.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues throughout the product life cycle.
  • Participate in and help improve the team’s software development practice.
  • Mentor and coach more junior staff. 

Are you the right candidate?

We don’t expect our engineers to know everything. We have access to both internal and external training opportunities as well as on-the-job coaching. Our Hot Shoes and 80/20 schemes provide opportunities to work with other teams for either short bursts or on a part-time basis. Within our portfolio we need full-stack capabilities.

If you are a strong Java Engineer and are looking to expand your knowledge and experience in Domain Specific Languages,  front end React/JavaScript, Node JS and GraphQL middleware, or AWS microservices using Python this role is for you.

To be successful in this role, you will ideally have the following skills and experience:

  • Experience writing and maintaining large scale, robust production software in a fast-changing environment with rapid release cycles.
  • Expertise in test driven development.
  • Expertise in developing for operational and non-functional concerns (monitoring integration, performance testing, scale, availability and resilience, security considerations).
  • Competence in translating product requirements into technical solutions
  • Technical Lead on at least one medium/large sized project (3 months+).
