As a support department our role is to make life as easy as possible for those using the BBC’s technology, while minimising the amount of Licence Fee we consume in doing so.
The Client and Server Platforms team is part of the Technology Support group within Engineering Operations. The purpose of the team is to provide Specialist services and is therefore the interface between the Support teams, Project delivery teams and Technology Suppliers. The Client and Server Platforms team are responsible for all pan Engineering Operations IT infrastructure and systems such as virus checking and patch management on an estate made up of nearly 3000 servers on primary sites and 1000 Broadcast critical PCs and Task Stations in Studios and Galleries. It is expected that these roles will eventually form part of a new team going forward called ‘Infrastructure as a service’, this team will be instrumental in introducing virtualisation across BBC production systems.
Systems Engineers in general are focused on forward looking, proactive work on technology systems. The role will work with Systems Engineers from Engineering Operations, Online Technology Group (OTG) and Project Departments on the development, projects and planned changes to ensure Virtual Systems are managed appropriately, fit for purpose and safe for the live environment. The role involves providing 3rd line advice and support, performing upgrades and configuration, providing specialist effort to projects and carrying out problem management including liaising with 3rd party providers. As part of this role you will engage with the Operational support, Service Design and Release Management teams.
