Job Introduction

The Senior sub-editor will work closely with the Brand Managing Editor, and will work on all aspects of sub-editing from copy arrival to publication of all key pages for Top Gear magazine and website, as well as other projects as specified from time to time.

This is an exciting opportunity to join champions of print, with the biggest motoring media brand in the world, Top Gear. You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of parts of Top Gear through this dynamic role, working across both print and online. Working in the Top Gear team you will have an impact in conveying the joy of cars while explaining the ever-changing industry. You will also have the opportunity to work with the writing and creative team as a content creator across the website.

Role Responsibility

You will write headlines, standfirsts and captions, ensuring the house style and tone is followed as well as helping to determine the style guidelines for Top Gear.

You will ensure the magazine and website are accurate through fact checking, taking into account legal accuracy factors. You will proof for spelling and grammar as well as ensuring pages are set correctly, always reviewing and adapting the proofing system to identify opportunities to improve standards and efficiency.

You will liaise within team to work on layouts and create proofs for the internal sign off process, ensuring pages are prepared and published on time.

You will ensure schedules and deadlines are adhered to, while staying on top of content flow.

In addition to your core responsibilities, you will create daily content, writing news and material for the website when required and supporting other members of the production team to deliver content, helping to shape and proof writing.

You will demonstrate a strong understanding and interest in cars and have a proven in-depth knowledge of the car industry.

You must have practical experience in writing, whether this was as a sub-editor on a paper, journal, magazine or website. You’ll be confident with your awareness of the law relating to journalism and knowledge of sources of information inside and outside the BBC. You’ll demonstrate sound editorial judgment.

You’ll have a proven skill in various computer programmes. Knowledge and experience of Adobe InDesign is essential and knowledge surrounding online CMS is desirable. In addition to this, familiarity with subbing marks and HTML editing tools is preferable.

You’ll demonstrate excellent time and scheduling management. You will be adept at delivering to conflicting deadlines to ensure that targets are met. In addition to this, you’ll be organised, able to plan and have the ability to prioritise. You’ll possess strong attention to detail, always be willing to learn and be able to work independently as well as being a team player. You’ll be confident at forming and maintaining partnerships across the business, working effectively with a variety of stakeholders including outside contractors.
