The Scripted Business Affairs team supports many of the BBC’s high profile flagship series such as Doctor Who, Silent Witness, EastEnders, Inside Number 9, Two Doors Down, Mrs. Browns Boys, as well as exciting productions for other commissioning platforms such as Apple TV (“Trying”), UKTV (“We Hunt Together”) and Amazon (“Good Omens”). Also, we look after a busy and successful Audio slate, including long-running favourites; “I’m Sorry We Haven’t A Clue”, “The Now Show”, “Dead Ringers” and “The News Quiz”.
Our Factual Business Legal Affairs teams work closely with the editorial leads in unscripted production to acquire and clear contributor rights to enable BBC studio to produce programmes for broadcast on the BBC public service and television channels and for other third-party commissioners.
Business Affairs Manager
This role acts as a senior point of advice and direction to the genre, Business Affairs team and the wider BBC Studios production community and will represent the unit at BBC Studios boards or forums as required. You will manage, conduct and oversee a wide range of Legal & Business Affairs activities across the territories throughout various stages of production, from the initial concept/development stage and commission (for both BBC and third party commissions), through to production/filming and final delivery for broadcast following all relevant policies and frameworks.

A Business Affairs Manager will possess a comprehensive understanding of scripted/factual Business Affairs for the television, radio, and digital media industry and be aware of the related BBC policy and strategy. You’ll demonstrate extensive market knowledge, for example, independent production costs and talent fees and you will have a sound knowledge of programme-making, production processes, and deal making for the genre.
You’ll be accomplished in negotiating and influencing and have contracting experience, specifically in managerial and rights and business affairs nature. With a proven track record in leading and delivering complex projects, you’ll be confident in managing time and budgetary constraints. An understanding of third-party development and commissioning terms (e.g. Sky, Channel 4, Discovery, Apple, Netflix) and of funding, rights acquisition and distribution issues, and commissioning processes in this area would be highly advantageous, in addition to the experience of working with US talent agencies and within the parameters of US union agreements (e.g. SAG, WGA, DGA).
Your curiosity and collaborative communication style will support your ability to build relationships across the organisation, particularly with your key stakeholders. You appreciate the high profile nature of BBC Studios and will act to promote and protect the reputation in all endeavours.
This role will require acting in a formal legal capacity thus you’ll need a legal qualification and suitable commercial PQE would be advantageous.
