Technical Operator

Job Introduction

This role provides a range of technical services to programme makers, contributing to the day to day activities, as well as to special projects. 

The successful candidate will work primarily to the operational needs of Radio nan Gaidheal, but may from time to time be expected to undertake television duties.

Role Responsibility

The Technical Operator will be expected to ingest video and audio material into the various media systems used across BBC Scotland and import, export and management of file based media.

You will monitor and quality control incoming and outgoing material,  manage the internal circuit routing and within the BBC and of satellite uplink and downlink workflows.

Operation of live studio equipment and transmission systems both in Radio and TV will be a requirement along with operation of studio remote camera and lighting systems and broadcast equipment on location.

Please note that this role will require early morning and weekend working. 

Are you the right candidate?

We're looking for someone who has experience of working with VCS audio systems and Avid editing platforms. Someone who demonstrates craft and operational aptitude and possesses technical skills and experience gained in a broadcast or similar environment.  You will have the ability to assess audio quality, which includes correct microphone for the required task, microphone placement, audio levels, ambient or induced noise along with the ability  to assess picture quality, which includes shot framing, lighting of the subject, camera exposure & colour balance. 

You will be prepared to embrace a learning environment - eager to seek out opportunities to expand knowledge and experience of operator role through formal training and other experiences. An effective communicator, you will interpret sympathetically the requirements of programme-makers and is able to appropriately suggest alternatives. 

The ideal candidate will be an excellent team worker - participating fully in contributing to the team’s decisions; flexible and proactive in taking on the roles required.Striving to provide the highest quality of work, both artistically and technically, whilst understanding and working within the limits imposed by available finance, resources and deadlines.  

You will need to be fluent in Gidhlig and also have knowledge of Gidhlig culture, tradition and song.
