Video Journalist, BBC Channel Island News

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

Job Introduction

BBC Channel Islands News is a small multi-skilled team. We broadcast on BBC1 at 18.30, 20.00 and 22.25. Two thirds of islanders watch our output each week. We have video journalists based in our Guernsey and Jersey newsrooms

The Bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey are completely independent of the UK and each other. We have three separate judicial systems, there is no NHS and the main industry is the offshore finance industry that you may have heard about. Guernsey isn’t part of the UK or the EU

The islands were the only part of the British Isles to be occupied by the Nazis in WW2 and we’ve just marked the 70th anniversary of their liberation. Jersey hosts the 2015 Island Games in June, when three thousand athletes from 24 countries will compete in 14 sports.

Role Responsibility

We are looking for a Video Journalist to work in our Guernsey newsroom to cover maternity leave. Your key duties will be reporting, filming and editing reports for our 18.30 and 22.25 programmes. You’ll need to demonstrate an ability to find original stories, display sound editorial judgment, use your strong technical skills to film and edit, as well as a flair for storytelling.

You must be a self-starter, happy to work on your own, as well as in a small team.

There will be the opportunity for the right candidate to report live on location.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:

  • Excellent television storytelling skills, including on screen performance
  • Ability to film with a small camera and edit TV packages
  • Sound journalism and editorial decision making.
