Video Producer (BJ), BBC Newsgathering (Nairobi)
Newsgathering's task is to provide the whole range of BBC News programmes with relevant broadcast news and current affairs material of the highest possible editorial, production and technical standards gathered throughout the UK and Worldwide in the most efficient manner. It has to ensure that in the face of increasing competition the BBC is the world leader in the gathering and provision of news material (information, pictures and sound) from Britain and around the World. Newsgathering has to provide a high quality service to pogrammes in the UK and internationally.
The BBC has huge global audiences in Africa and a strategy to work ever more closely with African programmes in English and those filing in African languages. There's an imperative to provide three-dimensional coverage of the continent using the entirety of the BBC's resources there. In particular with the launch of the BBC Africa.com website in the first quarter, there is an emphasis on reaching audiences online and on social media.
You will be working in a growing team of correspondents and producers and technical staff based in Nairobi and around Africa, providing specialist and general coverage of events and trends in the region across the range of BBC News outlets.
You will be responsible for producing video material across the range of BBC news.
You will be based in Nairobi in the News bureau, working as a member of the Newsgathering and African bilingual newsgathering team.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a creative and versatile journalist, with a strong understanding of what makes good digital video and how video is consumed on digital platforms. With experience of video production, editing and digital storytelling, you will have an in depth understanding of social media platforms - the BBC's and others - and the different ways audiences are consuming news. You will have experience of using video editing software similar to Q-edit or FCPX.
In addition you will have experience of working overseas, particularly in Africa and on breaking news stories. A good knowledge of Africa and African affairs is also required.
Local salary, contract and conditions of service - role starting on 1st February 2018.
