Our BBC Wales Production Apprenticeship Scheme could be the first step you make towards your career in media.

During the 12 month scheme you will get hands on training in exciting production areas whilst studying towards a Level 3 in Creative and Digital Media, which is delivered by learning provider Sgil Cymru.

If you are successful, you will have the chance to work in one of the following departments.

  • TV Factual
  • Digital & Marketing
  • Radio
  • TV Drama

You will be able to select your preferred department when you apply however you will still be considered for all areas.

What Are We Offering?

  • A 12 month fixed term contract with an salary of £14,250 per year
  • Training delivered by the BBC Academy from specialists and senior BBC and freelance production staff.
  • Level 3 qualification in Creative & Digital Media delivered by Sgil Cymru.
  • A BBC Mentor who offers support and advice, alongside your manager, for the duration of your apprenticeship
  • A former production apprentice will also be your ‘buddy’ so that you always feel there is someone there to ask those additional questions

Role Responsibility

Placement areas

During the apprenticeship scheme, you could have the chance to work across one of the following areas: 

Based at Roath Lock studios, Cardiff is TV Drama where a wide range of programmes for both local and network television including Pobol Y Cwm and Casualty are produced. Below are the areas which you could be placed for your apprenticeship:

Grip: To help the team with a range of duties such as maintaining the equipment that supports the camera which includes tripods, dollies (the wheeled platform which carries the camera and the Camera Operator), tracks, jibs, cranes and static rigs. As part of the Camera Team you will assist the Assistant Grip / Grip / Camera Assistant to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the production.

Costume: Apprentices will learn alterations, and maintenance, an understanding of production processes relevant to costume, experience in script analysis and continuity, production scheduling and an understanding of on-set etiquette. The apprentice will assist the Costume Runner / Costume Assistant / Stockroom Assistant to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the production.

Post Production: To support the Post - Production team with general office duties, including collecting kit, equipment, and rushes; photocopying; answering phone calls and emails. As part of the Post - Production Team you will assist the Assistant Editor / Post – Production Supervisor / Post - Production Co-ordinator in order to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the production.

TV factual is also based at Roath Lock: Factual/Unscripted Productions produce a wide range of programmes for both local and network television including Bargain Hunt, X-Ray and Crimewatch Roadshow. As part of the Production Team you will assist the Assistant Producer / Researcher / Production Co-ordinator with admin/logistic/on set support in order to ensure the smooth and efficient running of the production.

Based at Broadcasting House, Cardiff

Radio: Passionate for radio, you would have the opportunity to work across all our radio output in Cardiff. We are looking for someone to join our production teams and play a vital role in finding new contributors and content for our programmes across all platforms.

Digital and Marketing: BBC Wales’ Digital and Marketing department is playing a leading role in reinventing BBC Wales for a new generation.  Working with some of the biggest brands in Wales and beyond, the department champions the needs of the audience, looks for opportunities to innovate, delivers outstanding creative content and makes sure people know how and where to find it.  As an apprentice, you’ll have opportunities to work with multi-platform content makers, marketing and communications teams and media scheduling specialists.  You may have an interest in design, filming, editing, photography, copyrighting, marketing or animation.  An apprentice must be passionate about social media and interactive online content.

In your application, you will be able to select the department you wish to work in. If successful, although we can’t guarantee that you will be placed in your preferred area, your choice will be taken into consideration. You will still be considered for other placement areas.

Following an initial training period, you will then start training with the learner provider before starting your placement.

Along with your scheme manager, you will have a placement manager who will be responsible for your learning objectives and progress. You will be assessed on these objectives during the course of your placement.

This Apprenticeship programme is part-financed by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Government.

You will:

  • have a passion for content, whether that be TV, Radio and Online and be motivated to learn the production process from start to finish
  • love working with other people and be able to demonstrate that you are a great team player.
  • be full of ideas and can think outside the box. You will be able to demonstrate your creative flair throughout the application.
  • be interested in the shows and programmes created by BBC Wales.
  • be able to balance your time between your busy work placements as well as your work set by the learning provider and additional training.
  • be able to demonstrate your passion for the area of production that you wish to do your apprenticeship in.
  • not be planning to do this scheme as a gap year programme.
