Job Introduction

BBC Cymru Wales is the national broadcaster of Wales, providing a wide range of English and Welsh language programming and output for audiences on television, radio and online.  Its national TV programming for Wales is available on BBC One Wales, BBC Two Wales, BBC iPlayer and S4C. It offers two national radio stations, BBC Radio Wales in English and BBC Radio Cymru in Welsh, and two distinct websites. It is also responsible for a significant volume of network programming across TV, Radio and Online, including programmes such as Doctor Who, Crimewatch and Casualty. BBC Cymru Wales is also home of the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales.
This diversity across many different strands of TV Radio and Online output enables work experience students a unique opportunity to experience the BBC across a wide range of genres and platforms.
BBC Cymru Wales employs around 1200 staff, the majority in sites in Cardiff and Cardiff Bay, but also in other locations across Wales including Bangor, Wrexham, Aberystwyth and Carmarthen.

Role Responsibility

These placements provide a “taster” experience of working within the BBC and broadcasting industry. It is aimed at individuals who want to work in the media and would like to find out more about the range of jobs potentially available. Candidates will have the opportunity to see television, radio and online production at first hand.  Candidates will have the chance to spend time with those who produce and co-ordinate the output as well as the craft specialists who capture and post-produce it, along with the staff that provide engineering and IT support across all aspects of programme making and transmission

Are you the right candidate?

We're looking for applicants with a demonstrable interest either in Radio, Television or Online programme making and broadcasting.

Candidates should have good interpersonal and communication skills, be creative, adaptable and highly motivated. The ability to work well in a busy team is crucial. As well as needing an interest in broadcasting, candidates should have an awareness of BBC Wales and its local output.

Programme-making can be hectic and unpredictable and applicants should be confident that they will work well in such an environment.  The successful candidate should be prepared to ask lots of questions and contribute ideas.

Background/Experience

Rydym ni’n ymrwymedig i gyfle cyfartal i bawb ac yn croesawu ceisiadau am brofiad gwaith yn BBC Cymru gan unigolion waeth beth fo’u cefndir.  O ganlyniad i’r ffaith bod grwpiau pobl dduon a lleiafrifoedd ethnig, pobl ag anabledd neu bobl sy’n dewis llwybr mwy galwedigaethol i mewn i gyflogaeth yn cael eu tangynrychioli ar hyn o bryd, rydym yn annog ceisiadau gan ymgeiswyr o’r grwpiau hyn ond byddwn yn ystyried ymgeiswyr o bob cefndir ar sail eu rhinweddau unigol.

BBC Bangor Taster Week (open to applicants 16 and over)

Spend a week shadowing a variety of departments in Bangor – to include programmes produced for Radio Cymru (Welsh language), news material for radio, television and online (Welsh and English) and the technical aspects of production. It is an ideal opportunity to see the breadth of work carried out in Bangor.

The placement will be for 1 week, may include location work, and the hours will be varied

Welsh language skills are not necessary 

Newsgathering (Bangor over 18)

You will gain experience working in the busy newsroom in Bangor and possibly shadow one of our reporters as they gather material for radio, television and online for BBC Cymru Wales. There may also be a chance to see how a live Welsh language radio programme is produced. The placement will be for one week. The ability to speak Welsh is not essential but candidates need to be aware that the majority of the radio programmes produced are for Radio Cymru

Gosod Newyddion (Bangor dros 18)

Fe gewch brofiad yn gweithio yn yr ystafell newyddion brysur ym Mangor ac o bosibl yn cysgodi un o'n gohebwyr wrth iddynt gasglu deunydd ar gyfer radio, teledu ac ar-lein i BBC Cymru Wales. Efallai y bydd cyfle hefyd i weld sut y cynhyrchir rhaglen radio Gymraeg fyw. Bydd y lleoliad am un wythnos. Nid yw'r gallu i siarad Cymraeg yn hanfodol ond mae angen i ymgeiswyr fod yn ymwybodol bod y rhan fwyaf o'r rhaglenni radio a gynhyrchir ar gyfer Radio Cymru

We can offer placements of up to one week in the BBC Radio Cymru newsroom in Cardiff. Candidates would work with one of the station’s news programmes, the daily phone-in or the bulletins service. A keen interest in news and current affairs is essential for these roles, in addition to the ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh.

Newyddion Radio Cymru – (Caerdydd – dros 18 ac yn rhugl yn y Gymraeg)

Rydym yn cynnig cyfleon o hyd at wythnos o hyd yn ystafell newyddion BBC Radio Cymru yng Nghaerdydd, Byddai’r ymgeisydd llwyddiannus yn cael cyfle i weithio gyda thimau ar raglenni newyddion dyddiol yr orsaf, y rhaglen drafod ddyddiol Taro’r Post neu ar fwletinau’r orsaf. Unscripted Productions – Factual - Wales - BBC Studios (Cardiff - over 18)

Successful applicants will get the opportunity gain experience with one or more teams producing a range of local and network television programmes for television.    Projects include strands such as Bargain Hunt, X-ray and The One Show as well as one-off commissions.
You’ll get involved in supporting the production team in the office, which could include assisting with research, organising shoots, logging footage and other general production duties. You will gain a good understanding of the production process and have the opportunity to sit in an edit and possibly go on location.
The department would like to encourage as diverse a range of applicants as possible

Welsh language skills are not necessary 

Wales Sport (Cardiff - Over 18)

Do you have a passion for sport?  Would you like the opportunity to spend time alongside the Producers who make BBC Wales Sport content every hour on Radio Wales, Radio Cymru, online, social media, and for BBC and S4C TV. You may be given the chance to contribute and research ideas in our editorial meetings.  You would probably spend some time with our production support teams organising the travel and accreditation for our correspondents and journalists.  Whatever your sporting interest, you’ll have the opportunity to experience the buzz of helping us provide continuous output to our audiences in a live media environment.

Welsh language skills are not necessary
