Welcome to Work Experience opportunities across the regions within Radio. If you’re interested in Radio Production, Drama, Factual & Entertainment and getting some great practical experience on your CV, you’ve come to the right place.

The BBC is responsible for all the regional radio networks including Radio Oxford, Radio Jersey and Radio Guernsey.

Role Responsibility

Every placement is different, but your Work Experience will give you a good all round overview of Radio across music, news, debate and entertainment. We aim to give you an introduction on how local, national and international programmes are produced from beginning to end. You may get the chance to watch broadcasts go out on air, and understand the production processes used in areas of Drama and Entertainment.

Background/Experience

You don’t need a media qualification to apply. You just need to be able to show us that you’re passionate about Radio and have a genuine desire to find out what the industry has to offer.

We have placements available in the following areas:

Radio Drama - 'Home Front' - Birmingham (open to applicants 14 and over)

If you love listening to Radio Drama and are interested in our country’s history maybe this is the placement for you? A specially commissioned original drama is the spine of the Radio 4 offer to mark the centenary of World War One, with Home Front which started in August 2014. This is an exciting drama serial, unprecedented in scale with 500 episodes between 2014 and 2018, each around 12 minutes long. This is an opportunity to be mentored by our specialist team in all aspects of the work that they do from engaging in research, contracting talent, to timing the takes in studio. We are just about to start recording Season 5 in May.

Radio Drama – ‘The Archers’ - Birmingham (open to applicants 14 and over)

The successful applicant will be a keen listener of The Archers and Radio Drama.  This is an opportunity to be mentored by our specialist Production Management team in all aspects of the support work that they do, from researching storylines, writing programme synopses, contracting talent, to observing a studio record.

Radio Beds, Herts & Bucks, Three Countries Radio (over 18)

To initiate and produce, as part of a team, a wide variety of news and current affairs material for Radio from across Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

Radio Berkshire (over 18)

You'll have the opportunity to; work closely with all our programme teams, set up interviews, record interviews, edit audio, write cues and general programme production tasks. We expect candidates to clearly demonstrate a commitment to working within the broadcast industry in their applications.

Radio Coventry & Warwickshire (over 18)

You’ll spend four weeks at BBC Coventry & Warwickshire’s studios in Priory Place, Coventry.  This is a great opportunity to work across different programmes and in our newsroom. You’ll be hands on – researching stories, recording vox pops, setting up guests and learning how we put programmes together. We’re a seven day a week operation, so some early starts and weekend working may be involved.

Radio Cumbria (over 18)

Radio Cumbria provides an insight into researching, preparing and maybe reporting on a variety of news and programme stories.

Radio Derby (over 18)

BBC Radio Derby will arrange a placement which gives you an overview of the full range of roles within the station.  You will spend time with the news, sport and programmes departments.  We will try, where possible, to tailor a placement to your interests. 

Radio Essex (over 18)

Get an opportunity to overview BBC Essex’s news and programme operations. Your time with us may involve observing and shadowing, with some opportunities to take on specific tasks.

Radio Guernsey - Channel Islands Radio (October only - over 18)

Radio Guernsey provides an opportunity to watch the whole range of broadcast career opportunities that are available in local radio, television and online.

Radio Hereford & Worcester (over 18)

Successful candidates may get the opportunity to work across news and programmes in the studio and on location, to provide a range of experience of working in local radio

Radio Jersey - Channel Islands (over 18)

This placement is aimed at those students who have an interest in multimedia. Successful candidates may have a chance to watch the whole range of broadcast career opportunities that are available in local television, radio and online. The States of Jersey insist candidates must be “entitled” to live and work in Jersey and/or have strong family connections with the island.

Radio Lancashire - (over 18)

Successful candidates will be able to shadow reporters and producers and observe how ideas make it from planning to transmission. You may get the opportunity to suggest an idea and to get this idea on air or exposed to a wider audience on social media. Depending on whether your interests lie in news, sport or more general programming you will work with one of our teams.

Radio Lincolnshire (December only - over 18)

You'll get to experience working with news and programme teams doing basic research, taking phone calls, greeting guests and supporting presenters. Depending on programme requirements, there may be opportunities to develop basic interviewing and editing skills.

Radio Manchester (over 18)

You will be paired with one of the many programme teams on station assisting with a number of key areas depending on whether your interests lie in News or General programmes. You could be recording vox pops and setting up interviews to taking calls from listeners and meet and greeting studio guests.

Radio Oxford (over 18)

Get an opportunity to overview Radio Oxford’s news and programme operations. Your time with us may involve observing and shadowing, with some opportunities to take on specific tasks.

BBC Introducing - Oxford (over 18)

Successful applicants will gain experience of working in a live music broadcasting environment over the course of three weeks, working on one week day and on a Saturday. You'll work alongside the BBC Introducing in Oxford team and will spend time observing and shadowing production staff, with some opportunities to take on specific tasks. Candidates should have an interest in radio production and enjoy going to gigs in Oxfordshire and listening to local music.

Radio Stoke (1 week placement - Over 18)

You will get the opportunity to work across the schedules both in the studio and on location to provide an all-round experience of work on a local radio station

Radio Suffolk (over 18)

Experience an overview of local news journalism and radio programming involving observing and shadowing, plus the opportunity to record and edit pieces their own pieces.

Radio Sussex - Brighton (over 18)

BBC Sussex is pleased to offer placements at its Brighton headquarters, across a range of programmes, including our flagship Breakfast programme. You will get the chance to shadow our presenters and producers, along with the bulletins team and our Sussex reporter, who is deployed to stories across the county. Ideally, you should already be on a relevant course and/or have gained some previous experience elsewhere (e.g. community radio).

Radio Surrey - Guildford (over 18)

BBC Surrey is pleased to offer placements to gain experience primarily with our flagship Breakfast Show that goes out each weekday morning from 6 until 9. You will get the chance to shadow our presenter and producers, along with the bulletins team and our Surrey reporter, who is deployed to stories across the county. Ideally, you should already be on a relevant course and/or have gained some previous experience elsewhere (e.g. community radio).

Radio Wiltshire (over 18)

Successful candidates will get the opportunity to work with news team and programme team and have the opportunity to produce your own audio for output on air.
