Welcome to Work Experience opportunities in Salford within News & Journalism. If you’re interested in Radio & Television news, broadcast production, newsgathering techniques and getting some great practical experience on your CV, you’ve come to the right place.
The BBC is responsible for the production of news across all Networks
Every placement is different, but your Work Experience will give you a good all round overview of News & Journalism across programming, reporting and editing. You may get the chance to watch broadcasts go out on air and understand the processes for Drama and Entertainment.
During your online application, you will have the opportunity to choose your placement and tell us about the things you’re really interested in.

We want people who are creative, keen to learn and are up for a challenge. In News & Journalism we work in teams where everyone has a role to play. We’re looking for people who are friendly and good communicators.
We work at a fast pace. So you’ll need to be enthusiastic and motivated to keep up.
We take our jobs seriously and really enjoy what we do. If you’re passionate about News & Journalism and are prepared to work hard, ask lots of questions and contribute ideas, you’ll fit right in.
You don’t need a media qualification to apply. You just need to be able to show us that you’re passionate about News & Journalism and have a genuine desire to find out what the industry has to offer.

We have placements available in the following areas:
BBC Breakfast (over 18)
You will get an exciting opportunity to get involved behind the scenes of BBC Breakfast. This placement will introduce you to the fast pace of live news. You’ll get to work with forward planning teams working up story ideas, booking crews and logistics, be a part of the live studio output team and work alongside our very experienced journalists. There will be a 5am start for part of the placement.
BBC Radio Manchester (over 18)
This is an exciting opportunity to assist with preparing scripts, collecting vox pops and taking calls from listeners within Radio Manchester. There may be possible shift work for part of the placement.
BBC Newsround (over 18)
You'll have the opportunity to gain experience working on short film and programme ideas, helping to plan, schedule and organise some aspects of a location shoot to assist the team with location filming.
BBC 5 live News (over 18)
You will get an exciting opportunity to get involved behind the scenes of 5 live News working and being part of the teams that produce News programming for the station. This placement will introduce you to the fast pace of live news. You’ll get to work with forward planning teams working up story ideas, be a part of the live studio output team and work alongside our very experienced journalists.
BBC Sports News (over 18)
You will get the opportunity to work across different parts of our daily sports news journalism. You will see how the planning works to get the best from our sporting events to developing original stories. You will see how our sports output is put together across the News Channel and BBC World News. You will help our radio teams who are broadcasting on Radio 5 Live and the World Service and see the role production management plays in supporting our daily continuous news output.
Radio Current Affairs (over 18)
RCA in Salford is part of the bigger Radio Current Affairs department in London and is responsible for making two high profile strands. File on 4, for BBC Radio 4 and 5 live Investigates on Radio 5 live. You will get an exciting opportunity to work alongside our experienced journalists, working up story ideas, co-ordinating travel & logistics, sourcing archive material, assisting with social media promotion and there may be an opportunity to be part of the live studio output team on Sunday mornings.
