Welcome to Work Experience opportunities in Salford within Television. Whether you’re interested in Children's, Sport, and Learning and getting some great practical experience on your CV, you’ve come to the right place.

The BBC is responsible for a significant volume of TV across channels such as CBBC and programmes such as Rip Off Britain

Role Responsibility

Every placement is different, but your Work Experience will give you a good all round overview of production. You could be helping with research, learning how a studio operates working on outside broadcasts and in a live studio. You may get the chance to watch programmes go out on air and understand the processes for commissioning, producing, scheduling and broadcasting.

Background/Experience

You don’t need a media qualification to apply. You just need to be able to show us that you’re passionate about Television and have a genuine desire to find out what the industry has to offer.

We have placements available in the following areas:

BBC Children’s Production (over 18)

These general production placements are offered across whole of CBBC and CBeebies – including factual, entertainment and news. You will get a feel for the production process and have the opportunity to try out or shadow a wide range of activities in the office or in studio. We welcome enthusiastic candidates who have an interest in programme-making and children’s TV, including those with a particular interest in Production Management.

BBC Children’s Design Teams (over 18)

You’ll be helping to buy, design and make the set dressings which bring Children’s productions to life whilst gaining an insight into the role of the design team in television. Placements are offered across the whole of Children’s, including on factual and entertainment commissions, on-screen presentation and more. We’re looking for enthusiastic candidates with an art or design background and an interest in theatre, film or television design.

BBC Children’s Interactive (over 18)

You’ll be supporting one of our Interactive teams to create fantastic interactive content for our young audience, including our flagship apps and games as well as our websites and Youtube channels. We welcome enthusiastic candidates with a strong interest in digital content and an interest in developing skills in Photoshop, graphic design, CMS, Youtube, apps, etc. film or television design.

Entertainment North (2 week placement – over 18 only)

These are general placements with Entertainment North across all of our output, including both format and factual Entertainment programmes, and on brands such as Mastermind, Dragons’ Den and A Question of Sport, and/or with our development team.  You’ll get to be involved in supporting the production team in the office, during pre-production, tape logging and assisting in the sourcing of audience members.  You will gain a good understanding of the production process and have the opportunity to try out or shadow a wide range of activities in the office or possibly in studio or on location.  We are looking for committed and enthusiastic candidates who have an interest in programme-making and are looking to pursue a career in either Editorial or Production Management roles.

Learning (over 18)

If you’ve revised with Bitesize attended the Radio 1 Academy or joined in with a Live Lesson the chances are you’ve already seen and used some of our content. We would like to offer successful candidates the chance to work alongside the BBC Learning teams who make all of the above happen. From Social Media to large scale campaigns we have a range of careers on offer and we want you to join us if you’re passionate about Education, Learning and delivering first class content directly to the audience.

North West Tonight (January & February only - over 18)

A chance to gain experience within North West Television.  The team based in Salford delivers the latest news, sport and weather, with award winning journalists and high production values it is a great place to see daily newsgathering in action.   Successful applicants may gain an insight into the work of a busy television newsroom and see the production process through from start to finish by attending the morning editorial meeting, following a reporter out filming, seeing the piece edited and watching the live transmission from the gallery. You may also get a chance to work with the Sunday Politics and Sports Desk teams.

Rip Off Britain – Production Management (November & December only - over 18)

Rip off Britain strands include the main series; Rip Off Britain: Holidays and Rip Off Britain: Live and could offer placements assisting the production management team set –up the logistics for the location shoots, as well as assisting the filming teams on location should the schedule allow.   

Watchdog (Topical & Live) Salford (November – over 18)

If you join our team you will be required to fulfil a wide variety of tasks, no one day will be the same!  There will be many duties you will be asked to do but the main ones are:- to help out on filming days for Watchdog, assist in sourcing props, general running duties during the live studio days, transcribing rushes and assist in answering viewer’s letters, help with researching.  Hopefully, during your time with us, you will have a better understanding of how an as-live weekly consumer programme is made.  We are a lively, fun and busy team and we look forward to you joining our consumer programme.   

BBC Sport (over 18)

Placements are offered across a variety of areas of Sport in editorial, production management and journalism roles – you may end up working in any of our TV, Multimedia, News or Online teams and across numerous sports such as Football, Athletics or Rugby. We welcome enthusiastic candidates who have an interest in Sport, journalism and programme making.
