Work Experience Opportunities in Northern Ireland, March - June

Job Introduction

BBC Northern Ireland employs more than 500 staff, working across TV, Radio & Online. We produce a high standard of locally originated programme output across a range of genres, from News, Factual Documentaries and Current Affairs to Events.

You will get the chance to work across TV, Radio and Online in different genres and across various platforms. 

Role Responsibility

These placements provide a taster experience of working within the BBC and broadcasting industry. It is aimed at individuals who want to work in the media and would like to find out more about the range of jobs potentially available. You’ll have the chance to see television and radio production first hand. You’ll spend time with those who produce and co-ordinate the content across TV, Radio and Online. You’ll learn from the specialists who capture and post-produce the content and the people who provide engineering and IT support across all aspects of programme making and transmission.  

The placement may involve spending time at outside broadcasts, single camera shoots, studio recordings or in edit or graphic design suites and will give you a great overview of the various aspects of both television and radio production. 

Please note that some days might start early or finish late.

Are you the right candidate?

We're looking for applicants with a demonstrable interest in either Radio or Television programme making and broadcasting.

You should have good interpersonal and communication skills, be creative, adaptable and highly motivated. The ability to work well in a busy team is crucial. As well as needing an interest in broadcasting, candidates should have an awareness of BBC Northern Ireland and its local output.

Programme-making can be hectic and unpredictable and applicants should be confident that they will work well in such an environment. You should be prepared to ask lots of questions and contribute ideas.


We welcome applicants from all educational backgrounds. Candidates do not need to have a media qualification to apply but should be able to demonstrate their passion and genuine interest in broadcasting.  

We have placements available in the following areas:


Connecting with BBC Radio Foyle (3 day placement – open to applicants 16 and over)

Successful candidates may spend time shadowing the staff working across various radio programmes in BBC Radio Foyle, from news to entertainment. Candidates may see the work that goes on behind the scenes and how each programme is produced.

Radio Foyle Production (over 18)

Successful candidates may get to work with the various programme teams where they can contribute to the production of the various radio shows, come up with ideas, carry out research, conduct vox pops and possible interviews, and even get yourself on air.


Newsroom Belfast (open to applicants 16 and over)

The successful candidates will receive an overview in BBC News NI’s busy Belfast newsroom, spending time with our Digital News, TV News and Radio Current Affairs teams. It’s an ideal opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes.

BBC Rewind - Belfast (Over 18)

A chance to experience the day to day working, of the BBC Rewind team in Belfast. Working with the vast BBC archives, this team undertake innovative and future facing projects. You'll get to work on everything from developing ideas for Podcasts for BBC Sounds to pitching video explainers to BBC News Online. You can also play with our award winning VR, undertake production duties on content being produced for BBC Ideas and help shape new products we are developing. Successful applicants will demonstrate interest in new platforms and come with their own ideas for content to make during this 10 day placement.

BBC Studios - Belfast (over 18)

BBC Studios’ Unscripted Productions bases are in London, Bristol, Cardiff and Belfast.  It’s home to many of the BBC’s most popular brands such as Countryfile, Gardeners’ World, Crimewatch Roadshow, Bargain Hunt and Wanted Down Under. This work experience at BBC Studios in Belfast will involve working with the production teams in Belfast, including The One Show and long running BBC daytime show, Wanted Down Under. BBC Studios in Northern Ireland offers experience in the day to day running of the different programmes that will be in production at that time. This will involve basic research work, running for the office team, accompanying teams on location, transcribing interviews, sitting in on edits, brainstorming ideas etc. You’ll get to see the full range of what it means to be a producer in network TV.

Technology Operations - Belfast (16 and over)

Successful candidates may have the opportunity to observe the many aspects of support in broadcast technology including work in Maintenance, IT, News Operations and Technology Support Centre.
